Frequently Asked Questions about Inner Theater
Is it hard to get there?
Not at all. Inner Theater is very easy to access as we simply follow the images that come naturally to each person. We all think and talk in images anyway — you’re “between a rock and a hard place;” you’re “over the moon” with the good news or “under a dark cloud” after a downturn in your fortunes; you were too optimistic and “bit off more than you can chew,” etc.
What if I can't visualize?
That’s okay. Visualization is only one way that we experience imagery. Our inner world comes to us in different ways. A person who is more auditory may get the story in words. Someone who is more kinesthetic may just get a feeling about what is happening. When you’re working with a guide who respects your unique inner world, asks the right questions and helps the process along, you don’t have to try to make your experience be any certain way. Whatever comes naturally is fine.
Do we do the whole session with imagery?
Not necessarily. Often the session easily flows between ‘regular’ EFT and the image realm.
What makes this different from just fantasizing magical solutions to my problems?
Coming up with magical solutions in the conscious mind is completely different from allowing images evolve on their own while tapping. Something shifts when you allow an image to come to you and just let it be, then start tapping, and see what happens. An inner experience unfolds in the here and now that you are not manipulating and controlling. I suspect that we have shifted into the right brain mode which is not ruled by logic or conscious control. And whatever changes or transforms is deeply felt.
I'm already very experienced with EFT. Is Inner Theater EFT going to be very different?
The EFT process we use is very much the same as standard EFT, with just a few variations. As an EFT Master Trainer, my work is always grounded in the core principles of EFT. All of the foundational skills are respected and inform the work. The main difference you will notice is that I often don’t use numbers and intensity ratings (0-10). Numbers involve a shift back into left brain to evaluate intensity and are not really needed here. But we can certainly use them if you like.
I've never done EFT Tapping. Do I need to know EFT before I can experience Inner Theater?
Not at all. I teach you the process during our first session and give you resources so that you can continue tapping on your own if you like. You can also get a taste of EFT here: Try EFT
Is the Inner Theater approach trauma-informed?
Yes. Working with imagery is a gentle technique, meaning that the images allow us to maintain a safe distance from what could be retraumatizing and yet effectively address upsetting material. So much can be contained in an image. Often, the subconscious knows just what to do to transform the images in ways that accomplish healing with great safety. However, if your issue involves serious trauma, we will discuss this with care before deciding whether this kind of session is the best and safest way to proceed.
What if this imagery approach just isn't working for me?
Then we can seamlessly move into a more standard EFT session. As a former French teacher, I value speaking different languages! My intention is always to tailor the session to meet the needs of each person.
